LONDON (MarketWatch) -- HSBC Holdings PLC Sunday said it was discussing with Lone Star Funds how to move forward with its planned purchase of a 51.02% stake in Korea Exchange Bank . HSBC Asia Pacific Holdings entered into a conditional agreement to buy the stake in September 2007, but the bank failed to get regulatory approval for the $6 billion deal by the deadline on July 31. This left the deal open to termination by either HSBC or Lone Star.

The new rules are 'heavy on math' and employ two panels of judges: one for technical difficulty, which adds points up from a score of zero; the other for execution and technique, which starts at 10.0 and subtracts for errors. The two numbers are then combined for the final score. As one judge put it, 'The system rewards difficulty. But the mistakes are also more costly.' The new rules were adopted after South Korea protested a scoring at the 2004 Olympics." Merrill Lynch's bad loans sale to state-run Korea Asset Management Corp., or Kamco, has stalled over a pricing difference, the Reuters news agency reported, citing a KAMCO spokesman. The differences arise on about $200 million in so-called distressed assets, Reuters said. "We have been in talks with Merrill but couldn't narrow the price gap," said a Kamco spokesman, according to Reuters. "Now we'll drop the discussion so far and start a new round of negotiations," the unnamed spokesman was quoted as saying in the report.

Lt. Gen. Patrick O'Reilly said, 'The kill vehicle was sent to a very accurate spot in space giving us great confidence.'"
