Careful Spending and Your Music Career

Date: Thu, 3. February 2011 09:23:57
Your money versus your music career. It's a common battleground for anyone trying to get a footing in the music biz, whether you're trying to promote yourself as a musician, launching a music related business or just trying to pay the rent with the proceeds from your entry level music job. On one hand, all of those things you've heard, like "you've got to spend money to make money," are true to a certain extent. You've got to be in it to win it, and sometimes being in it involves a financial risk. On the other hand, if you want to keep doing this music thing long term, it's important that you don't think in terms of just "risk" but rather take the idea of "mitigated risk" to heart. That means sourcing money carefully and spending it wisely on things that are going to allow you to keep building your career. In other words, it is better to spend your money on three regional tours than one tour of Tahiti (unless, of course, Tahiti is in your region). Sure, going to Tahiti would be cool, and you can definitely talk yourself into the idea that being that band who did their first tour in Tahiti will get you a lot of press. In reality, while you may get a tan, you will also big bills with little sustainable boost for your music career - and that all translates into the need to keep that day job. Need some help figuring out where to get the money for your music career, and how to spend it once you have it? Well, music supervisors are just that cool. Now, mind you, with that kind of coolness comes great responsibility (read: stress). After all, being a music supervisor isn't all about, "wouldn't it be awesome to have The Jesus and Mary Chain Just Like Honey kick in as Bill Murray rides through early morning Tokyo?" (Waiting for Translation - wow, is the music good in Sofia Coppola films) - in fact, that pay off  of the perfect scene usually comes well after plenty of back and forth and negotiation between plenty of different parties with divergent interests. In other words, music supervisors have to know their music, their licensing rules and their good negotiation strategies. But yeah, you're right - it is still a cool job (and no, it's not always about movies). Find out more about music supervisors work and see if it might be the perfect music industry fit for you.Music Career Profile: Music Supervisor originally appeared on About.com Music Careers on Wednesday, December 8th, 2010 at 09:32:50.Permalink | Comment | Email this
