Tax Conscious Stock Sale: A Case StudyDate: Tue, 6. January 2009 15:32:37
pI wrote a couple of weeks ago about why a href="http://www.pfblog.com/archives/6304_the_value_of_essential_tax_knowledge.shtml"some basic tax knowledge/a will not only help you to maximize your tax refund after the fact, but will also serve as good guidance on how one should plan financial activities beforehand. Case on point: my exit strategy on my investment in Apollo Group, Inc. (a href="http://finance.yahoo.com/q?d=ts=APOL"APOL/a). /p
pFor those of you who don't know, Apollo Group is the operating of University of Phoenix, Inc. (UPX), an accredited university with predominant online presence, and many other educational institutions. I bought 400 shares of its stock at $35.07 apiece on November 20, 2006, following strong recommendation from Morningstar equity research's recommendation. (In retrospect, I bought the stock almost at its 3-year nadir. What a perfect timing!)/p
pNow the stock APOL is trading at over $75 apiece and I'm happily watching my original investment of $14,000 turned out to be another double-bagger. Apparently the stock is no longer cheap at 22 times forward P/E. In fact, in my a href="http://www.pfblog.com/archives/6300_portfolio_update_september_2007_up_375.shtml"latest monthly portfolio review/a, I have listed my target (sale) price of APOL as $65, but I still haven't sold the stock yet. Why? /p

Portfolio Update - November 2007 (Down 3.75%)Date: Tue, 6. January 2009 15:32:16
pimg alt="stockmarket.jpg" src="http://www.pfblog.com/stockmarket.jpg" width="115" height="115" align="left" /strongSUMMARY/strong/p
pThe stock market took a nosedive in November after three months of gains. At one point, the market was officially declared "in correction," defined as more than 10% off recent highs./p
pObviously my finance-stock-stuffed portfolio is not spared from the chaos. It ended the month with a 3.75% loss, even slightly worse than the benchmark loss of 3.47% in the same month. On a year-to-date basis, my portfolio is still up 9.4%, compared to 8.4% gain of the benchmark./p
pstrongTRANSACTIONS/strong/p
pI'm quite busy in managing my positions in November. Key transactions include:/p
p1) Exercised 1/3 of my vested employee stock option positions (strongMSFT/strong) at $36.60. Before this month's transaction, I haven't exercised stock option for over 7 years now. The action is prompted first by valuation concerns -- MSFT was bid up to a level that is above my calculation of intrinsic value after a blow-out Q1 release, and second by diversification purposes -- my employee stock option account was representing 17% of our net worth at the end of October and it was obviously too high.br /
